Course Syllabus for Social Studies 8: Civics and Economics




Being a good citizen, taking part in your community, understanding how your government works and being able to participate in that government is the purpose of eighth grade civics.

The following are the Civics National Content Standards:
I. What are civic life, politics, and government?
II. What are the foundations of the American political system?
III. How does the government established by the Constitution embody the purpose, values, and principles of American Democracy?
IV. What is the Relationship of the United States to other nations and to world affairs?
V. What are the roles of the citizen in American democracy?

National History Day:

NHD is a way for students in grades 6-12 to study history and learn about issues, ideas, people, and events that interest them. Students choose a topic to study for the year. In the spring, these students present their projects, historical papers, exhibits, performances, or documentaries, at the regional competition at Radford University. The winners move on to the state competition in Williamsburg, VA and then those winners participate at national level on campus of the University of Maryland in College Park, MD.
