PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Welcome to the world of Physical Science. This course will follow the objectives for Physical Science 8 as stated in the Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools published by the Board of Education, Commonwealth of Virginia. Below is a guideline for the year with the Standards of Learning Objectives listed.

First Six Weeks (Science Standards of Learning PS.1)
  1. Item 1 Measuring with scientific units (metric system).
  2. Item 2 Experimental design using the scientific method.
  3. Item 3 Plan and conduct investigations.
  4. Item 4 Graphing.

Second Six Weeks
  1. Item 1 Investigate and understand the basic nature of matter. (Science Standards of Learning PS.2)
  2. Item 2 Investigate and understand various models of atomic structure including Bohr and Cloud (quantum) models. (Science Standards of Learning PS.3)
  3. Item 3 Investigate and understand how to use the periodic table of elements to obtain information. (Science Standards of Learning PS.4)

Third Six Weeks
  1. Item 1 Investigate and understand changes in matter and the relationship of these changes to the Law of Conservation of Matter and Energy. (Science Standards of Learning PS.5)

Fourth Six Weeks
  1. Item 1 Investigate and understand scientific principles and technological applications of work, force, and motion. (Science Standards of Learning PS. 10)
  2. Item 2 Investigate and understand states and forms of energy and how energy is transferred and transformed. (Science Standards of Learning PS. 6)
  3. Item 3 Investigate and understand temperature scales, heat, and heat transfer. (Science Standards of Learning PS. 7)

Fifth Six Weeks
  1. Item 1 Investigate and understand the nature and technological applications of light. (Science Standards of Learning PS. 9)
  2. Item 2 Investigate and understand characteristics of sound and technological applications of sound waves. (Science Standards of Learning PS. 11)

Sixth Six Weeks
  1. Item 1 Investigate and understand basic principles of electricity and magnetism. (Science Standards of Learning PS. 11)

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

Students will communicate through application software, networks and telecommunication. Students will have basic understanding of computer processing, storing, retrieval, and transmission technologies. Students will apply these sklls in a long-term project this year which requires students to investigate and report on a topic related to objectives listed in the syllabus.

Materials
  1. Item 1 Small three ring notebook
  2. Item 2 Pencils, markers, and colored pencils
  3. Item 3 Textbook
  4. Item 4 Goggles when needed for labs
  5. Item 5 School agenda

Grading Policy
Graded items such as quizzes, class assignments, notebook checks, or written labs have equal value. Tests, projects, and unit notebook grades will have double value.

Parents will be informed throughout the school year of their child's progress. Please call if there are questions or conerns at any time. Please schedule a conference by calling guidance at 382-5165.
