cjervis9/10 12:15 PMWelcome to the site for discussing our watershed ecology work.
dreed9/21 6:40 PMMe and Amara are working together. See Ya!
cjervis9/22 2:54 PMThose of you who turned in your permisison slips, you need to come up with a definition of "pond" and "watershed" for the project. Discuss what the characteristics of each are and try to reach a consensus definition. Try to make the criteria observable and measurable if possible. You need a definition before Monday next week.
lsharp10/19 4:24 PMDid anyone look up the salamader to see if we can ID it?
cjervis10/20 9:55 AMIt is very important too that biology students remember that they will need to incorporate into their final product the chemistry data for the Pond and streams that the chemistry students obtained as well as the data from the Earth Science students. As complete a description of the Pond watershed as is possible at this time needs to be in the product.
cjervis10/20 5:39 PMCheck out this site http://www.cnr.vt.edu/efish/
dreed10/21 5:03 PMdo you want use to get the info from the earth science and chemistry students on the pandapas pond trip
cjervis10/22 6:09 AMAbsolutely...they need your information too. The chemistry students have summarized it. The earth science students have it in a compact form.
lsharp10/25 11:49 AMHi guys! We went to Tom's Creek and found very good diversity and abundance of macroinvertebrates. Look on a map and see if you can find Tom's Creek in relation to Poverty Creek?
dreed10/26 4:19 PMmrs. sharp, i did not find anything on the salamander but found what i believe to be the fish that we found. i am in the process of emailing you some pictures of you and ms. peters and some students working because jervis said you had to document your work too! say hey to ms peters and i will get you those pictures of the trip as soon as possible.
lsharp11/16 1:55 PMThanks very much for looking up the fish, I look forward to seeing your pictures.--LS
lsharp11/16 1:57 PMWhere is Poverty Creek in relation to Tom's Creek? Where is Poverty Creek in relation to the New River? (try topozone.com if you don't have another mapping resource)
lsharp11/16 2:01 PMSalamander ID: somebody go look at http://fwie.fw.vt.edu/VHS/salamanders_of_virginia.htm; I saw 2 that I thought looked pretty much like it, let me know which ones youall think look like they might be it?--LS
dreed11/18 4:22 PMI think it might be the Cow Knob salamander. they both have light underbellies and they look similar to me. see ya!
dreed11/18 4:24 PMi have not had a chance to get those pictures i promised but i will get them to you. sorry
dreed11/18 4:29 PMi went back and read the info on the salamander i said it might be earlier and found it was not found in water so i looked at some others and found the northern dusky salamander and it is found near trickling water
lsharp11/24 9:58 AMI thought northern dusky salamander was likely myself. Thanks.--Llyn
lsharp11/24 10:00 AMI heard that youall had found that Poverty Creek is a tributary of Tom's Creek--yep! They flow through very different geology and landscape in their upstream reaches. Why do you think they call the stream Tom's Creek instead of Poverty Creek after the confluence?
lsharp11/24 10:03 AMThe stream that comes off the mountain over the Cascades is Little Stoney (or Stony) Creek. Where does it flow into New River? --LS
dreed11/29 4:52 PMMaybe because some guy discovered it and thought it was a new creek insted of the same as Poverty Creek. I have no sources to back it up though. I'll get back to you on the Stony Creek things soon. See ya
cjervis12/7 6:32 AMHere is a data summary site for the field trip http://teacherbridge.cs.vt.edu/private/users/cjervis/biology/bioh/watershed/Home
cpynn12/10 7:33 AMIs Pandapas Pond manmade, or natural? If it was manmade, then why was it made? Exactly what percent of Jefferson National Park does the pond take up? What types of protista live in Pandapas pond? Does Pandapas Pond shelter any creatures that are rare in other parts of Virginia? Are the insects that we were catching a dominant species? Which creek has the greatest depth? I was told that there was a cave in the pond area, how close is it? You told me that people settled along poverty creek, were there any other places in the pond area that people settled? If there were any other places that were settled, how was the living condition at the time?
lsharp12/10 10:27 AMI went out to Poverty Creek where we did the macroinvertebrate study downstream of Pandapas Pond and got lat/long of 37.28048 and 080.47208. This seems to plot believably with topozone.com. Please add to your macro and other data for that site.
lsharp12/10 10:28 AMPoverty Creek-Tom's Creek answer--I don't know the "real" answer, but would speculate that Tom's Creek was slightly bigger and more populated, so that was the name carried downstream. Let me know if you find any authoritative source.
dreed12/10 12:33 PMsounds good, i will
