Calendar example

The calendar object is still under construction and has a number of "rough edges". Please feel free to play with it and report any problems you encounter or suggestions that you have.

To create a new calendar like the one in the sidebar of this page:
  1. Log into the full editor and go to the site where you want to put the calendar.
  2. Choose "Add to..." from the "File" menu, choose "Experimental Objects", then "Blank calendar", then click "Create". (The Calendar will move out of "Experimental Objects" when it has been polished a bit more.)
  3. Select the calendar and choose "Rename..." from the file menu. In this example I renamed the calendar to "my calendar".
  4. Double-click the calendar to open it and add events. To add or modify an event:
    • First find the day by using the "Go" menu or clicking the Previous/Next buttons on the week or month view. Clicking on a day in either the week or month view will switch the day view to the selected day.
    • To add a one-time item that starts on an hour between 8 and 6, simply click in the field next to the hour and type. The item will be added when you click on anything outside the field.
    • To add a repeating item, an all-day or untimed item, an item that does not start on an hour between 8 and 6 or is not an hour long, or a "to do" item that is not associated with any time specific day or time, click the "New" button.
    • To change an existing item, simply edit the text in the day view. If you need to change other details of the time (start/end times, repition), click in the text and then click the "Details" button.

A calendar can be viewed on the web (e.g., a link like "*my calendar*" adds a link like: my calendar), and can also be embedded in another web page by enclosing its name in backslashes. For example, the calendar in the sidebar of this page was created by entering "\my calendar\". Clicking on the link from the month name or any day with an event will take you to a larger view of the calendar with more detail on the events for the month.

When embedding a calendar in a web page you have a number of options. If you open the calendar in the full editor and choose "Web Options..." from the calendar's "Calendar" menu, you can pick one of the following:
  1. A list of today's events
  2. A list of events for the next seven days
  3. A list of this week's events (seven days, starting with the most recent Sunday)
  4. A list of events from now until the same date next month
  5. A list of events from this month (starting with the first day of the current month)
  6. A small calendar grid, like the one in the sidebar of this page.
  7. A large calendar grid. This implementation is still under construction, so some of the links on calendars embedded in this way may not work as expected.
  8. A list of events from now until the same date next year
  9. A list of events from Jan 1 to Dec 31 of this year
