Field Data Map-based tracking tool for Stream Water Quality monitoring, tree planting (chestnuts, etc.), Bio SOL remediation q&a tool.
utilizing different kinds of GIS map data about the region (despite me mentioning it at the last minute after suggesting several scenarios without referring to it at all). For example:
Field Study database for Pandapas Pond: Collaborative network to support a sustainable database of activities and data water and soil (including nutrients, pH, Nitrates, water hardness, and bacterial coloform);
Activity guides
Data sets of background information
Pics and species list of plants and animals present at the site

WebPals
Been doing this for over 5 years now and are ready to try new technology.
WebPals consists of eighth grade students from Blacksburg Middle School (BMS), Farmwell Station Middle School (Northern Virginia), and Virginia Tech students earning a teaching degree. The Virginia Tech students are ones who take the course "Literature for the Adolescents" with Dr. Kathleen Carico.
This group of eighth grade students engages in a variety of activities based around literature that they read together.
E-mail - students are put in triads of one middle school student from each school and one Virginia Tech student in order to discuss what they have read and have discovered in the readings.
NetForum - an electric bulletin board where discussion topics are posted and students respond to messages in threaded conversations.
MOO - On line chats that take place in real time. Students take part in small group discussions with their WebPals.
Needs:
1. Of course, as always, more computers
2. More up-to-date MOO software.
3. More ways of connecting to each other such as computer cams and/or teleconferencing.
4. Any of the new technologies I don't know about yet!
6th; General Science; 7th Life Science; 8th Physical Science; Christiansburg Middle MCPS
Turner
Alphabet: (8th) Physical science word and drawing (not on computer bc of equal access issues). "Would be good to share with lower grades."
Invention: economics and consumer math activity related to writing an advertisement online.
Quiz Game: (done w/ Bunn at AMS in Eisenhower Grant). Games and competition with scoring system. (See Quiz support)
S. Shelton: (7th) Life Science
"Webquest" activity for various learning units.
Former Hyperstudio project: kids designed games, mazes, jeopardy, "space cells" (quiz tool), "Bingo the Ape" (quiz tool) for specific SOL application (Describing the parts of cells).
A. Shelton:
Possibly wants to work with Prosser at BMS on various collaborative activities.
Augustine: Ecology and Chemistry; Eastern Montgomery High MCPS
North Fork Roanoke River: Water quality testing
Needs audience: currently publish in school notebook
Part of activity with various parts: quality assurance, quality control (testing), sample plan, sample site, etc.
(HACH company: trained for water testing, e.g. municiple water).
Chemistry "Mock City" activity. Students presented a paper and speech for a "town meeting" that involved debating issues related to urban planning and environmental concerns.
Gough: Bio, Bio II, Anatomy ; Eastern Montgomery High MCPS
Interested in various online and webpage related project (web site of class materials)
Has developed a number of sources for SOL materials using computer resources
On-site field data collection/plant identification (taxonomy aide)
uses The Globe Program http://www.globe.gov to collect and generate data for stream and weather monitoring for student projects
needs combination of Globe and Save Our Streams (SOS) http://www.saveourstreams.org/ data resources with more local map for plotting data

Level: Biology, Earth Science, and MACC; Narrows High GCPS
Mountain Academic Competition Conference (MACC) and South West Academic Competition Conference (SWAC) an academic competition in which school teams compete by answering oral questions in math, science, english, and all around (See Quiz support)
MACC teams need:
ways to practice with particular question formats in various locations (school, home)
practice competions (with scoring etc.)
hints and techniques for answering MACC style questions
ways to create questions, discuss questions and techniques, and contribute to and draw from questions pools
Online Handbook of rules etc.
Delivery of questions and answers immediately after MACC matches
Access to basic information expected of teams:
elements of periodic table
ions
reading list
Blanton: Biology, Science Club; Giles High GCPS
The Science Club at GHS has been involved with several activities in the past that might benefit from Bridge tools.
Recycling contests
Ecology clean-ups
Conservation efforts associated with public information and incentives
Field trips
nature retreats/hiking
experiencing meteor showers
Science Musuem visits
Other possibilities include:
Utilizing, maintaining, and developing GHS's Outdoor Classroom
Monitoring local wildlife (birds, fish, etc.)
Other interests:
How to supplement Labs
manipulating data/results in simulations that are otherwise hard to manage and reproduce in classroom labs
Wheeler: 6th and 7th grade Science; Narrows Elementary and Middle GCPS
Administrative assistant for NE/MS that is very interested in cross curriculum / classroom collaboration and resource sharing in general.
