The CMS Counseling Office is off to a busy start this year!  First of all, we have acquired a third counselor, who will be with us part time this year.  Her name is Wendy Lawrence Cooke, and we are so pleased to welcome her to CMS.  Ms. Cooke will be working with all students whose last names begin with the letters T-Z.  She will be here at CMS on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Our open house in August was very successful.  We have enrolled lots of new students (our enrollment is now at 838 including students who were with us last year but have not yet started school) and helped all our new youngsters, including 6th graders, transition to CMS.  Many schedules have been made during the first weeks of school.  Counselors plan to spend a week in September in classrooms talking with students about the many services the counseling office has available for them.  A refresher discussion about child abuse—what it is, how to report it, and what happens after reporting—will be included in each presentation.  Many parent/teacher conferences have also been arranged.  If you would like to arrange a conference with your student’s teachers, please call the counseling office at 394-2185 to do so.

This is also the place to go to get your youngster’s assignments if he/she is absent two or more days.  Please call the counseling office by 8:30 a.m. to request assignments.

Our peer mediation program is up and running and the bully prevention program should shortly be underway as well.  The 7th grade Planning for College Success Club will soon be getting underway.  Additionally, CMS counselors will soon be offering students opportunities to participate in group counseling based on students’ expressed interests.

CMS counselors are committed to helping the entire CMS community have a successful and productive school year.  Be sure to call your student’s counselor for assistance whenever needed.

GREAT OPENING FOR CMS

Our new schedule for this year seems to be working well.  Lockers, books, handbooks, agendas, and other pieces of information have been assigned and given to students.  Our school improvement committees are meeting and making plans for this school year.  The committees are: (1) Attendance, (2) Community Outreach, ( 3) Instruction, and (4) Student Activity.  As part of our efforts to involve the community in the school, we are asking for volunteers to come in and provide help to students and/or teachers.  If you are interested, please call any PTA officer or the school.  Don’t forget to sign in as a volunteer in the main office when you arrive.  CMS wants to be known as a “community school” so stop by to visit, cheer for our teams, read to students, or run copies for teachers.  Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
