Spring 2009

As we move through April and into May, the Virginia Standards of Learning assessments (SOL's) loom ahead. The SOL's assess what our students have learned in the areas of math, reading, science and social studies. The math and reading components also determine if our school makes Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as determined by the federal government. Our students and teachers have dedicated themselves this year to ensure we are prepared for these challenging exams. The SOL's are a performance, similar to a band or chorus concert, or an athletic event. During the course of the year we learn new information and practice until our performance. I am confident that CMS will once again earn accreditation by the state of Virginia and will make history by achieving AYP. We begin SOL testing on May 4 and it will run until May 29. A complete schedule of the exams is posted on our website.

The final marking period begins on April 29. We have many end of the year activities planned. Our spring band concert will be held on May 14, while our chorus concert will be held on May 21. We will also be hosting a Student Rock Concert & Talent Show on Friday, May 29. The last day for students is June 11. I ask all students to finish the year academically strong and prepared for the rigors of the next grade level.

There are several accomplishments we would like to share. Ms. Jayanne Bridges was the recipient of the 2009 McGlothlin Award. All classrooms have an overhead LCD projector and each team has a set of CPS units or "clickers." We have purchased three additional smartboards and the CMS PTA achieved their goal through our fall fundraiser. I would finally like to thank all parents, guardians and community members who have supported CMS this year. Through your efforts, we will continue to strive for excellence and meet the needs of ALL learners.

Challenge + Motivation = Success
