  • Assignment 4 - Civil War Letters

1. Go to website # 2

2. Click on "letters about the war," then click on "Private Thomas D. Newton."

3. Find both his letter home and the obituary written about him.

4. Read both letters.

A. Copy a line which shows what Thomas Newton thinks about the war.

B. Copy a line in the parents' letter which show they miss and care for their dead son.

C. How old was Thomas when he died?

D. How did Thomas trick the Union soldiers who were trying to capture him? (This is described in his parents' letter.)

E. Copy a line from either letter which you think is interesting or important
