![]() The following assignments are based on the play Antigone by Sophocles and the resources found in your Elements of Literature textbook. Choose any 5 of the assignment choices below to complete. Projects must be typed using 12 point, Times New Roman Font, and double-spaced with one-inch margins. EACH project is worth up to 25 points; due Monday, October 31st Presentation is worth up to 10 points; Monday, October 31st & Tuesday, November 1st (You choose which project to present) Total Possible Points = 135 Assignment Choices: 1. Mini Poster Project Include on the front of your poster: 1) three quotes from the play that you find important or intriguing, 2) the scene or ode and line number of the quote, 3) decorations or illustrations that compliment the quote, Include on the back of your poster: 1) a one-paragraph explanation of why you selected the quote. (i.e. explain why you liked the quote and why you chose it.), 2) your name, 3) class period, and 4) the date. Materials needed: Three sheets of blank standard size paper or construction paper *Be sure to include illustrations. 2. Examples of Assonance, Alliteration, and Internal Rhyme - Read Ode 1 (p. 705). Find at least two examples of each of the following: assonance, alliteration, and internal rhyme. 3. Examples of Dramatic Irony - Find five examples of dramatic irony. 1) Quote the passage that contains the irony (or in the case where it is better to explain the situation, explain what is going on in the scene), 2) include the scene and line numbers that contain the example, and 3) explain what is ironic about the scene or passage. 4. Write a Brief Impressionistic Poem of Haimon (i.e. haiku or tanka; see page 570 in Elements of Literature.) Write a poem that either praises Haimon for his bravery in standing up to his father or condemns him for his ineffectuality. (*Hint: Do not go into too much detail; the poem should present a single feeling.) Include on the front of your poster: 1) your type written poem and 2) appropriate decorations. On the back of your poster include: 1) a one paragraph explanation of your poem, 2) your name, 3) class period, and 4) the date. Materials: Three sheets of blank standard size paper or construction paper. *Be sure to include decorations. 5. Persuasive Paragraphs - Find evidence for three of the following statements and write one persuasive paragraph for each statement: Creon secretly fears Teiresias Antigone died in vain Money is a prime motivation for Creon Hatred and fear of women is the prime motivation for Creon 6. 3 Paragraph Explanation of Teiresias - Teiresias is an interactive character, yet in many ways he stands apart from society. In three paragraphs, list and explain ways Teiresias is an outsider. 7. Etymology of Vocabulary Terms Consult a dictionary and create a chart that includes: 1) the word, 2) the definition, 3) the etymology, and 4) the connection to Antigone if any: Chorus Comedy Episode Exodus Imitation Melodrama Orchestra proscenium Prologue Scene Nemesis Theater Tragedy Thespian Satyr *Hint: The above words come to English from Greek drama. For further guidance on etymology, review the vocabulary activity on p. 715 in Elements of Literature. 8. Advertisement Poster - Prepare a poster advertising a production of Antigone. Your poster needs to include information on: 1) location of the play, 2) dates of performance, 3) ticket prices, and 4) should feature a striking visual that relates to a theme or conflict in the tragedy. Materials: Card stock, construction paper, or standard size white paper *Be sure to include illustrations 9. 6 paragraph Exploration and Explanation - In his Literary History of Greece, Robert Flaciere writes, "what is genuinely new in the plays of Sophocles was their greater emphasis on the development of individual character His characters are no longer simply the playthings of the gods. They act in accord with definite ideas of their own. All of Sophocles' protagonists display unshakable will power " In three paragraphs, explore who you think was the best example of "unshakable will power". In three paragraphs, explain whether you think Sophocles saw this "unshakable will power" as a virtue or a flaw. * Remember your project will be graded for grammatical and mechanical correctness. Therefore, it should be as error-free as possible. |
