Anterior Pituitary

  • FSH (follicle stimulating hormone)
    • Stimulates activity on ovaries and testes
  • LH
    • Stimulates activity in ovary (release of ovum)
  • TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone)
    • Stimulates thyroid gland
  • Growth Hormone (GH)
    • Stimulates bone and muscle growth
  • Endorphins
    • Inhibits perception to pain (also produced by the brain)
  • Prolactin
    • Causes milk secretion

Posterior Pituitary

  • Oxytocin
    • Causes uterus to contract
  • Vasopressin (ADH/antidiuretic hormone)
    • Causes kidney to withhold water

Thyroid (thyroid hormones)

  • Thyroxine
    • Regulates the metabolic rate in body tissue
  • Calcitonin
    • Decrease blood’s calcium levels

Parathyroid

  • Parathyroid Hormone  
    • Increase blood calcium concentration

Adrenal Cortex

  • Glucocorticoids
    • Increase blood glucose concentration
  • Mineralocorticoids (Aldosterone)
    • Increases Na+ and water reabsorption in kidney
  • Cortical Sex Hormones
    • Responsible for secondary sex characteristics (especially in men)

Adrenal Medulla

  • Epinephrine
    • Regulates metabolic rate
  • Norepinephrine
    • Regulates metabolic rate

Pancreas

  • Glucagon
    • Decrease blood sugar concentration
  • Insulin
    • Increase blood sugar concentration

Ovaries

  • Estrogen
    • Promotes female secondary sex characteristics
  • Progesterone
    • Gets uterus ready for pregnancy

Testes

  • Testosterone
    • Promotes male secondary sex characteristics
