Lewis 11C

Welcome to college prep junior English! Our Junior English curriculum includes American literature, SAT preparation, and a predominantly persuasive writing program. Throughout the year, we will read about 50 of our most significant authors, poets, and playwrights. Vocabulary development during the first semester will focus on preparation for the SAT and will include weekly quizzes. Writing instruction will emphasize research, analytical, and persuasive composition.
The junior year is the year of the research paper. During the first semester, we will work on analytical and research skills each six weeks so that by the second semester, you will be able to produce a paper that would be acceptable in a freshman college course both in form and content. The junior year is also the year of the SAT. We will spend one day per week working on your vocabulary skills, which according to certain studies is the best way to increase scores on the verbal portion of the SAT.

Grading Policy

  • Each six weeks grade will consist of a variety of reading quizzes, vocabulary quizzes, objective tests, and written assignments.
  • Your semester grade will consist of three six weeks grades and your semester exam, each worth 25% of the total.

Make-up Policy

  • Make up your work as soon as you return. You might have to get class notes from a friend, so work out a mutually beneficial arrangement with someone in your class. See handbook for details.

TardyPolicy

  • Your first two tardies each six weeks will result in 1/2 hour each of detention. Your third tardy in a six weeks will result in ISS.

Dress Code and Behavior

  • I am contractually bound to enforce all school policies as stated in the handbook. Please be clear on the policies regarding electronics and dress.

Please plan to use a word processor for all out-of-class writing. If you need help or access to a word processor at school, see me and we will make arrangements. You should keep and organize all assignments, handouts, tests, essays, etc. into a notebook, folder, or file as a permanent record. This will be the basis of your semester exam review.

The textbooks that I issue to you may be left at home unless I ask you to bring them with you. I provide a classroom text for most of the class reading and discussion. Unless I tell you otherwise, you only need to bring paper and pen to class each day. Please save all of your writing on a floppy disk or your hard drive at home. A floppy is more portable and can save you in certain emergency situations.

I will accept no papers by e-mail.

Learning can be exciting and rewarding when accorded the proper respect and attention. I look forward to getting to know each of you.
